Brainwave Science

Binaural beats work by playing two slightly different frequencies in each ear. Your brain perceives the difference as a rhythmic pulse, which can entrain neural oscillations toward specific states.

Theta (4-8 Hz)
Deep creativity, meditation, memory
Theta waves dominate during light sleep, deep meditation, and creative insight. Research shows theta entrainment improves divergent thinking by 15-25%. Best for: brainstorming, writing, problem-solving that needs "aha" moments. Studies: Reedijk et al. (2013), Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
Alpha (8-12 Hz)
Relaxed focus, learning, flow state
Alpha is the bridge between conscious thinking and subconscious. Associated with the "flow state" described by Csikszentmihalyi. 10 Hz stimulation has been shown to reduce anxiety by 26% and improve working memory. Best for: reading, email, steady-state focus. Studies: Chaieb et al. (2015), Experimental Brain Research.
Beta (12-30 Hz)
Active thinking, analysis, alertness
Beta waves indicate active, engaged thinking. Low beta (12-15 Hz) supports calm attention; high beta (20-30 Hz) drives complex reasoning and decision-making. Best for: coding, spreadsheets, data analysis, meetings prep. Studies: Lane et al. (1998), Physiology & Behavior.
Gamma (30-100 Hz)
Peak cognition, insight, information binding
Gamma is associated with higher-order cognitive processing, cross-brain information integration, and moments of insight. Tibetan monks show elevated gamma during compassion meditation. 40 Hz has been studied for cognitive enhancement and neuroprotection. Best for: complex problem-solving, synthesis, strategic thinking. Studies: Jirakittayakorn & Wongsawat (2017), Cognitive Neurodynamics.
HOW IT WORKS
1. Left ear receives 200 Hz tone
2. Right ear receives 200 + X Hz (where X = target brainwave)
3. Brain perceives X Hz "phantom beat"
4. Neural oscillations gradually entrain to X Hz
5. Takes 8-10 minutes for full effect (pair with 25+ min sessions)
